New year, new features
… and some new projects on the drawing board for My Journal.
But before all, in what is my first personal message this year, let me salute you, all my friends out there, and wish you a Happy New Year! May you enjoy times of peace and happiness wherever you are!
/* End guilt for not sending New Year cards and emails /*
And now back on topic…
“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main”, rightfully said almost 400 years ago John Donne. The same is even more obviously true about one of our extensions today, our blogs. In this light, I’ve been working hard lately to enhance my little piece of the web, trying to provide it a better semantic integration (i.e. SmartLinks and GoogleMaps) and also trying to improve the quality of the information presented here on My Journal.
As a newly started project of this blog, I hope you’ll enjoy the Kyoto 365 page, where you’ll find relevant local information displayed in the most intuitive way I could think about: a calendar.
I have conceived this calendar quite rich in features (entries should have associated descriptions of events, access maps, photos etc.) and as a consequence, this page requires a fair amount of work. I expect to be able to keep it updated with data up to a month ahead during this year. It has been proven useful for me, as a Kyoto resident interested in the city’s cultural life, and hopefully it will also prove useful for other people living here or just visiting. So, be sure to check on it often, for freshly added info!
Another new feature of this personal blog - already successfully implemented but waiting some updating to include older posts as well - is SmartLinks. You’ll see it in action throughout the posts, where it appears as a tiny blue box next to a relevant link. This appears to be a great way to get extra useful info on whatsoever. Not to mention that it saved my Amazon linking problem, something that other 3 WP plugins couldn’t properly handle. Fortunately, smart aps came to rescue!
Finally, I have a couple more projects waiting in the queue, and they look just as promising and useful: A Timeline of Universal Literature and one of the Western Art Music Composers (a.k.a. ‘Classical’ Music Composers). But they’re really only in early project stages right now, so I’ll come back to them when their time comes.
